On 3rd November 2021, DEFRA put in place a UK-wide Bird ‘flu Prevention Zone. This is law and subject to a hefty fine if the regulations are breached. But what does this mean and how do we, as small back garden Chicken Keepers, deal with our birds during this time? You can find lots of information about the measures to take on our Bird ‘flu Hints & Tips page. On our Videos page, we have videos explaining the new measures. We will also put updates on our Facebook page.
From Mon 29th Nov 2021 a 'Housing Order' applies to the whole of the UK. This means you must, by law, keep your birds undercover or housed to avoid all contact with wild birds and increase Biosecurity measures. These include:
* Cover your chicken/duck/bird enclosures to prevent wild birds contaminating the run * Put feeders and drinkers undercover * Cover, or exclude your birds from, any ponds if possible * Add a footbath with disinfectant outside their run area * Make sure footwear is disinfected when going in AND out of the pen.
