Blackbirds prefer a nest box with an open-fronted design like this one, as do Wrens, Spotted Fly Catchers, Song Thrush, Pied & Grey Wagtails and Robins.
Available in Natural Green or Chestnut Brown, the colours are unobtrusive and will match with most garden decor.
Our design incorporates an overhanging roof to protect against extremes of weather with drainage in the base to allow any moisture to escape. The roof is held in place with a screw, so just unscrew for more access when cleaning the nest box at the end of the season.
Handcrafted here in our Dorset workshop and constructed from the best quality, slow-grown, joinery-grade, Scandinavian Redwood. The 20mm FSC close-grain timber has excellent insulation properties to keep the birds warm in winter and cool in summer.
Each nest box is finished in a bird-safe micro-porous acrylic coating for long term preservation against fungal attack and rot. All screws are double-plated and hinges are solid brass, so your bird nesting boxes will last you for many years to come.
Overall (external) measurements: Width: 20cm; Height: 31cm; Depth: 19cm (front to back); Opening is 11cm wide x 8cm high. Colour Choices: Natural Green or Chestnut Brown, select above.
Siting of your Blackbird Nest Box: Blackbirds are one of our most common garden birds in the UK and its mellow song is very identifiable. They love gardens with trees and shrubs where they can feast on insects, worms and berries.
The breeding season lasts from early March to late July, and chicks are often found in a nest well into August.
Mount the nesting box 1.5m - 2m above the ground in a sheltered, shady spot preferably facing south east and protected from any prevailing weather. If too high they may not use it and if too low predators (cats) will easily access the chicks. The nest box can be cleaned out between October, once the last brood has flown, and January as many birds start looking for a nest in Jan-Feb.
