Hardwood Woodchip for Chicken Runs

The chickens love it; it keeps them clean, gives them something to scratch in all day long, washes through with the rain and only needs changing perhaps once or twice a year. Much better than bark, which we do not advise because of the mould spores, and bark does become slushy after the rain; softwood would degrade very quickly and just work its way into the mud; hardwood woodchip though will just sit on top of the ground and can easily withstand all weathers; even though it is a hardwood it is still soft enough for the birds and best replicates the surfaces of their ancestral roots from the jungle. We have found this woodchip is an absolutely perfect surface for chickens.

Flyte so Fancy Woodchips have a nominal 10-40mm particle size and conforms to British standard BS:EN1177:2008. They do not contain recycled wood waste or bark mulch. Hardwood Woodchips are produced from sustainably harvested British forests. FSC Certificate No CU-COC-806457. The product shall have been tested in accordance with the requirements of BS4790:1987 for fire resistance and be classified as having low potential to burn.

These Handy Bags weigh approx 15-20kg (by volume 50L), depending on moisture content of woodchips at the time of bagging i.e. the seasonal variations. Estimate one sack will cover approx 10 sq ft with a 50mm - 80mm depth (To clarify: 10 sq feet is an area of 10ft by 1ft, or approx 1metre by 1metre). To calculate your run area:- length times width divided by 10 equals the number of bags you need. So a 9ft x 9ft run would need 8 bags (9 x 9 = 81, divide by 10 = 8).

Note: Delivery for a single bag to most UK destinations is £7.32 (due to weight); 2 bag delivery is £9.40; 3 bags is £13.79 and so on. This 10 bag option will cover an area of approx 100 sq ft.

Price does not include delivery which is dependent on postcode destination. Delivery by pallet company (to postcodes in mainland England) is £39.95 - for other areas just add to basket, select destination and delivery will be shown in your basket. Pallet delivery is 2 - 3 days after despatch and does require access for a small lorry (we can send in boxes by courier if access is a problem, just let us know). We always try and despatch the pallet within 2 days of ordering, this may be longer during busy times. The driver will place the pallet in a convenient place on your property for you to unpack as you wish. A signature on delivery is preferable but if you are happy for the pallet to be left safely please mention this when ordering.

Hints & Tips: If ordering large quantities of woodchip to store for later use (very economical if you have the space to store them), then we do advise making sure there are air holes in the stored bags to allow moisture to escape and prevent sweating inside the plastic bags, which can produce moulds.The moulds, if they appear, are harmless and would disappear within a few days of spreading out the woodchip to air dry.
