Sizing and Siting for your Bird Nesting Boxes
Which size hole do I choose for which species of garden birds?
The entrance hole size of the Nest Box you choose will determine which garden birds will use it for nesting.
More than 60 wild bird speciies are known to use nest boxes for their breeding season so you should be able to attract a selection of birds by careful siting and sizing..
25 - 28mm holes are used by smaller birds like Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Great Tits, Marsh Tits, Willow Tits and Tree Sparrow.
32 - 34mm holes are used by Pied Flycatchers, Nuthatch, Great Tits, Tree Sparrow and House Sparrows.
Open Fronted Bird Boxes are used by Blackbirds, Wrens, Spotted Fly Catchers, Song Thrush, Pied & Grey Wagtail, Pied Flycatcher and Robins.
How and where should I site my Nest Box?
The best height for a nest box is between 1.5m and 5.5m high. However, if the area is prone to visits from the neighbourhood cat population, then the box could be sited higher to prevent these garden bird predators.
The box should face anywhere between north and southeast so that the entrance will avoid strong sunlight and the prevailing wind direction. By their nature the open fronted nest boxes require some cover so siting them near climbing plants where they can be obscured is ideal.
