Bee Boxes from Bee Happy.org.uk Bee Happy.org.uk are a small local Dorset company run by Jon Colman who produces beneficial Solitary and Wild Bee Nest Habitats. These boxes will ensure the presence of these useful pollinators on your farm, grounds or garden. Without bees to pollinate our plants, our food production could drop by a third.
Jon makes the Boxes from locally grown Cedar, sustainably produced, and gathers the fillings of bamboo, logs and cones locally too. A wonderful project to not only support small companies but also benefit our whole environment and eco-system.
Bees are a vital part of our planet's eco-system, without them many species of plant would fail to be pollinated and would become extinct. This would lead to the loss of not only plants but animals too because their food sources would disappear.
The flowers available to bees play a part in their success. Some, such as dandelions and oil seed rape, yield nectar rich in sugar and it is easy to access, great for the shorter tongued solitary and honey bees.
Encouraging bees to nest or even just to pollinate the flowers in your garden is a rewarding process and there are many simple things you can do to help them feel at home. Let those brambles in the corner creep a little further, plant a buddleia or better still turn a little of your lawn into a meadow.
Meadows are a wonderful place for bees to forage for food held in native flowers. They provide plenty of food especially if the mix of different wild flowers used provide a good nectar sources through out the summer. Fruit trees are also a plentiful source of flowers for the bees. Encouraging more pollinating insects to use your garden will be directly correlated to an increase in yield from your fruit, vegetables and flowers.
